Bangladesh army chief holds wide-ranging talks with top Indian military officials

Bangladesh Army Chief General S.M. Shafiuddin Ahmed on Thursday held wide-ranging talks with top Indian military officials with a focus on further strengthening the already strong military ties between the two countries. Officials said Gen Ahmed and Army Chief Gen Manoj Pandey reviewed the overall cooperation between the two armies and explored ways to further expand ties.

The visiting Bangladesh general met Navy Chief Admiral R Harikumar, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Defense Secretary Giridhar Armane and Vice Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal A.P. Also met Singh. General Ahmed had met Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan on Wednesday. He arrived here on Wednesday on a three-day visit to India.

The Defense Ministry said that General Pandey and General Ahmed discussed ways to strengthen interoperability, training, counter-terrorism partnership and overall bilateral cooperation under the overall strategic partnership between the two countries. He said that General Ahmed was also briefed by the Department of Defense Production (DDP) and the Army Design Bureau about the Indian indigenous defense equipment manufacturing ecosystem.

An “implementing arrangement” for UN peacekeeping operations and training cooperation between India’s Center for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK) and Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training (BIPSOT) will be discussed during the visit, according to the Defense Ministry. Signed by both the parties.

The Bangladesh Army Chief will be the reviewing officer for the passing out parade to be held on April 29 at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai. He will also visit the Officers Training Academy Museum and interact with the cadets of the passing out course.

The Bangladesh Army chief began his visit by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial and paying homage to the martyred heroes of the Indian Armed Forces. The visiting General was given a guard of honor at the South Block lawn, after which he met Army Chief General Manoj Pandey.

The ministry said, “India and Bangladesh share a historical legacy of cooperation and support during the 1971 Liberation War.” , holding of initial Annual Defense Dialogues by Defense Secretaries, tri-services and service-specific staff talks.
