Several Punjab leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh, on Monday defended pacer Arshdeep Singh, who is being “trolled” on social media for dropping a catch in an India-Pakistan match during the Asia Cup in Dubai. Pakistan won that match by five wickets on Sunday. Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet and BJP leader Manjinder Sirsa have also defended the 23-year-old cricketer. Former cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan tweeted, ‘Stop criticizing young Arshdeep Singh. No one deliberately drops a catch. We are proud of our team. Pakistan played well. Shame on those who talk badly about their own players on this platform. Arshdeep is pure gold.
Chadha said, “Arshdeep is so talented that he will lead the Indian bowling attack in times to come. Hate cannot harm him.’ The Sports Minister of Punjab said, ‘Loss in sports always leads to victory. Arshdeep has made a name for himself in such a short span of time and also did well against Pakistan. Criticizing him like this for dropping a catch is wrong. Arshdeep is the future of the country and an inspiration to the youth. There is no place for hate in sports. He spoke to Arshdeep’s mother Baljit Kaur over phone and said that Punjab and the entire country is with him.
Former Chief Minister Amarendra Singh said, ‘All this (missing catches) keeps happening in the game. We should support our players. Arshdeep need not despair. He has a long and golden career ahead of him.
BJP leader Manjinder Sirsa while giving a befitting reply to Arshdeep speaking Khalistani said, ‘Arshdeep Singh is a promising player. He played brilliantly and the whole country is with him. There is a country before cricket and I stand with Arshdeep Singh by rejecting this propaganda of Pakistan.
