India told Qatar on Sunday that the controversial remarks against minorities are not the views of the Indian government but of anarchic elements. In response to media queries regarding a statement issued by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on an objectionable tweet in India, the Indian Embassy spokesperson in Qatar said, “Ambassador Deepak Mittal had a meeting at the Foreign Office. It was attended by individuals in India.” Concern was raised with regard to some objectionable tweets defaming religious personalities. The ambassador said that the tweets do not in any way reflect the views of the Indian government. These are the views of petty elements.

“In line with our civilizational heritage and strong cultural traditions of unity in diversity, the Government of India accords the highest regard to all religions. Strict action has already been taken against those making derogatory remarks,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the primary membership of the party and expelled its Delhi media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal for alleged inflammatory remarks against minorities.

“A statement has also been issued by the people concerned emphasizing the respect of all religions, condemning the insult of any religious personality or insulting any religion or sect,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that vested interests who are against India-Qatar relations are provoking people by using these derogatory remarks.

“We must work together against such miscreants who aim to undermine the strength of our bilateral relations,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has embarked on a four-day visit to Qatar with a high-level delegation during his three-nation tour. This trip also includes visits to Senegal and Gabon.

Qatar’s foreign ministry on Sunday summoned India’s ambassador to the country, Dr Deepak Mittal, and handed over an official note to him. It expressed disappointment, total disapproval and condemnation of the controversial comments from Qatar.

Meanwhile, Qatar welcomed the statement issued by the ruling party in India announcing the suspension and expulsion of party officials.
