The former player of Ajax and international with Democratic Republic of Congo, Jody Lukki, has died at the age of 29. Although at first the causes of death were not disclosed, several media indicated days later that it was due to a brutal beating carried out by his own family after a heated discussion.
After receiving the aggression, the doctors operated on him urgently and opted for amputate a leg damaged by an infection, but the player did not survive the intervention. She went into a coma, which led to cardiac arrest, and eventually died. For all these reasons, the Police has taken charge of the case to purge responsibilities.
Lukoki was trained in the lower categories of Ajax, with which he reached the first team. He later went through the PEC Zwolle of the Eredivisie, the Bulgarian Ludogorets and the Yeni Malatyaspor of the Turkish First Division. The 29-year-old footballer won the Eredivisie three times for Ajax, a competition to which he had returned after signing for two years with FC Twente last June, although he did not make his debut after suffering a cruciate ligament injury of his knee during the preseason. Later, Lukoki’s contract with Twente was broken last February due to “problems in his personal life”, according to the team itself.
Twente has been the one who has confirmed Lukoki’s death through a statement. “The club is shocked and deeply moved by this tragic news. Twente sympathizes with their loved ones and wishes them much strength to process this enormous loss,” the club said. His other teams also dedicated emotional words to him. “PEC Zwolle has known, with dismay and pain, the untimely loss of our former player Jody Lukoki,” explained the club where he played after leaving Ajax. “Lukoki will always be remembered as PEC Zwolle’s first ever goalscorer in European competition. PEC Zwolle wishes Jody Lukoki’s loved ones a lot of strength to face this huge loss,” they comment in a statement.
Yeni Malatyaspor, the Turkish team where he played last season, also paid a small tribute to his former footballer. “We have learned with great sadness the news of the death of Jody Lukoki, who wore our club’s shirt in the 2020-21 season. Our condolences to his family and his friends,” assured the Ottomans. Lukoki represented the youth ranks of the Netherlands up to the U21 level, but opted to play for the Democratic Republic of the Congo at senior level, with whom he made his debut in 2015. All of his appearances with “the leopards” were in friendly matches, the last being against Burkina Faso in 2020.
