66 years of strength shown, now recorded in the pages of history

Panipat, April 25 (Nice)

The oldest sugar mill of Panipat in the cooperative sector was closed late on Sunday evening after crushing sugarcane for 66 years. The name of the old sugar mill will now be recorded in the pages of history. The crushing of sugarcane was stopped in the mill late Sunday evening and after the sugar is made from that sugarcane juice, the mill would be duly closed within a day or so. This sugar mill of Panipat is the only one in Asia in which sugarcane was being crushed for the last 66 years by two 350-350 horse power steam locomotives of Railways. Railway’s steam locomotives were also installed in many other sugar mills of the country but due to new technology and their cost and problems, they were stopped but 2 steam locomotives imported from Czechoslavia by koda company continued to provide their services at Panipat Sugar Mill. Both the engines will now be placed near the gate of the new sugar mill built in Dahar village of Panipat by making platforms as a memorial on both sides. The old Sugar Mill of Panipat was built on Gohana Road in 1956 during the United Punjab. Now the sugar mill has come inside the city and there is a residential area around it. People from nearby colonies had also complained to the NGT about pollution caused by sugar mills. The crushing capacity of this sugar mill is only 18 thousand quintals per day and a new sugar mill of crushing capacity of 50 thousand quintals per day has been installed in Dahar. After the commissioning of the new sugar mill, this old sugar mill has now been closed.

Sugar Mill MD Navdeep Singh Nain told that the old sugar mill has been closed due to shortage of sugarcane. Dahar’s new sugar mill is running. This was the last crushing season of the old mill.
